Our approach

Why We Treat Dry Eye Differently

Most dry eye care stops at the symptom. Artificial tears top up the tear film and can make the next hour more comfortable, but they do not change how well your meibomian glands are working. For a large share of dry eye patients, meibomian gland dysfunction is a major contributor, and drops alone leave it unaddressed.

The Dry Eye Trifecta takes a different route. Rather than one technology, it combines IPL, controlled eyelid heat and low-level light therapy in a single visit, each aimed at a different contributor to evaporative dry eye. Which of them you actually need is decided at your evaluation, based on what your ocular surface, eyelids and gland function show.

One comprehensive treatment visit Approximately 30 to 45 minutes.
The three therapies

IPL, MiBo Thermoflo and Low-Level Light Therapy

All three are performed back to back in the same visit, about 30 to 45 minutes from start to finish.

Legacy Wave IPL

What is IPL for dry eye?

IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, delivers controlled pulses of light across the cheeks and nose around the eyelid area, with cooling at the skin surface. In appropriately selected patients, IPL may help reduce inflammatory processes associated with meibomian gland dysfunction and evaporative dry eye.

About 15 minutes
How it feels
A warm, gentle snap with each pulse
Afterwards
No downtime; sunscreen on the treated area

Potential clinical goals

  • Reducing periocular inflammation
  • Improving meibomian gland function
  • Improving tear-film quality
  • Addressing abnormal periocular vascularity when appropriate

MiBo Thermoflo

How does MiBo Thermoflo work?

MiBo Thermoflo holds a controlled therapeutic temperature of 108°F against the outer eyelids while the provider gently massages them. Sustained warmth can help soften thickened meibum so it can move more easily through the meibomian glands, where a warm compress cools within a few minutes.

At a glance

Session length
About 12 minutes per eye
How it feels
Like a steady, comfortable warm compress
Afterwards
No downtime; you can drive yourself home

Potential clinical goals

Low-Level Light Therapy

What is low-level light therapy for dry eye?

Low-level light therapy, also called photobiomodulation, uses specific red and near-infrared wavelengths delivered through a light mask that rests over closed eyes. When clinically appropriate, it may help support inflammatory control and ocular-surface health. It is used in the Trifecta alongside IPL and MiBo Thermoflo rather than on its own.

At a glance

Session length
About 15 to 20 minutes
How it feels

Does This Sound Familiar?

Burning eyes Watery eyes Gritty or sandy sensation Eye redness Fluctuating vision Eyes that feel tired Contact lens discomfort Sensitivity to wind or air conditioning Constant need for artificial tears Morning irritation Heavy or irritated eyelids

If drops only provide temporary relief, it may be time to determine what is contributing to your dry-eye symptoms.

Why Are My Eyes Still Dry Even Though I Use Eye Drops?

Artificial tears supplement your tear film, which can relieve symptoms for a while. What they do not do is change how well your meibomian glands are producing the oil layer that slows tear evaporation. If drops help for an hour and then the burning comes back, that pattern is worth investigating.

What Is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction?

Meibomian gland dysfunction, or MGD, is a condition in which the oil-producing glands along the eyelid margin become obstructed, or the oil they produce becomes thickened. Because that oil layer is what keeps tears from evaporating too quickly, reduced gland function is a common contributor to evaporative dry eye. It is also why watery eyes and dry eyes can happen in the same person: an unstable tear film can trigger reflex tearing.

An evaluation looks at your ocular surface, eyelids and gland function so treatment is chosen based on what is actually contributing to your symptoms. Some patients are better served by a medical eye exam first, and some dry-eye symptoms turn out to be related to contact lens wear.

Your Dry Eye Care Is Doctor-Guided

The Dry Eye Trifecta is a medical eye-care service delivered through an optometry practice, not a spa treatment. No one is sold a treatment program before a doctor has examined their ocular surface, eyelids and meibomian gland function and confirmed they are an appropriate candidate.

FAQ

Dry Eye Treatment: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Dry Eye Trifecta?

The Dry Eye Trifecta is Everyday Eye Care’s signature in-office treatment approach for patients with meibomian gland dysfunction and evaporative dry eye. Rather than relying on a single technology, it combines IPL, controlled eyelid heat and low-level light therapy during the same treatment visit, with each component intended to address a different aspect of the dry-eye cycle.

What treatments are included in the Trifecta?

Three therapies performed in one visit: Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), MiBo Thermoflo and Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT).

How much does the Dry Eye Trifecta cost?

The recommended four-treatment Trifecta series is $1,700. Individual Trifecta treatments are $600.

How much do I save with the four-treatment package?

$700 compared with purchasing four individual $600 sessions, which would total $2,400.

How many Trifecta treatments do I need?

The standard initial program is four treatments. Clinical recommendations depend on your examination findings, so your doctor may adjust the plan based on your ocular surface, eyelids and meibomian gland function.

How far apart are Trifecta treatments?

Typically approximately four weeks apart. Your doctor may adjust the interval based on how you are responding.

How long does each appointment take?

Each Trifecta session takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes. The three therapies are performed sequentially during a single visit.

Does the Trifecta hurt?

Most patients tolerate it well. IPL is often described as a warm, gentle snap against the skin, MiBo Thermoflo feels like sustained warmth on the eyelids, and LLLT is not felt at all. Comfort varies between patients, and you should tell your provider if anything is uncomfortable during treatment.

Why are my eyes still dry even though I use eye drops?

Artificial tears supplement the tear film, which can relieve symptoms temporarily. They do not change how well your meibomian glands are producing the oil layer that keeps tears from evaporating. If drops only help for a short time, an evaluation can determine whether meibomian gland dysfunction or ocular-surface inflammation is contributing to your symptoms.

What is meibomian gland dysfunction?

Meibomian gland dysfunction, or MGD, is a condition in which the oil-producing glands in the eyelids become obstructed or the oil they produce becomes thickened. Because that oil layer slows tear evaporation, poor gland function is a common contributor to evaporative dry eye.

What is IPL for dry eye?

IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, delivers controlled pulses of light to the periocular area. In appropriately selected patients it may help reduce inflammatory processes associated with meibomian gland dysfunction and evaporative dry eye, and address abnormal periocular vascularity when present.

What is MiBo Thermoflo?

MiBo Thermoflo provides controlled external eyelid heat with a handheld treatment device while the provider gently massages the eyelids. Therapeutic heat can help soften thickened meibum so it moves more easily through the meibomian glands.

What is low-level light therapy for dry eye?

Low-level light therapy, also called photobiomodulation, uses specific wavelengths of light as a non-invasive adjunctive treatment. When clinically appropriate, it may help support inflammatory control and ocular-surface health.

Do I need a dry eye evaluation first?

Yes. A doctor should assess your ocular surface, eyelids and meibomian gland function and determine whether you are a candidate before any Trifecta treatment is scheduled. Treatment is not sold without an evaluation.

Does insurance cover the Dry Eye Trifecta?

Your dry-eye evaluation and the advanced treatment program are billed differently. Medical insurance may apply to portions of your diagnostic dry-eye evaluation. The advanced in-office treatments are elective and have separate self-pay fees, and we cannot promise coverage for them. We will go over the specifics with you before anything is scheduled.

Can I use HSA or FSA funds?

Many patients ask about this. Whether a given treatment qualifies depends on your specific plan and on current qualified medical expense rules, so confirm eligibility with your plan administrator before assuming it is covered.

Do you offer financing?

Yes. We offer Cherry patient financing, and you can check your options in about a minute without affecting your credit score.

Is there downtime after treatment?

You can generally return to normal activities the same day. Mild redness of the treated skin can occur after IPL and usually settles within a few hours. Sunscreen is recommended for the treated area.

What happens after my four treatments?

Your doctor reassesses your symptoms and gland function and discusses whether periodic maintenance is appropriate. There is no single schedule that fits every patient.

How much is Trifecta maintenance?

Trifecta Refresh is $450 for established patients who have completed the initial Trifecta series and for whom maintenance is clinically recommended.

How often do I need maintenance treatments?

There is not one schedule for every patient. Whether and when maintenance is appropriate depends on your symptoms, meibomian gland function, ocular-surface findings and your doctor’s clinical assessment.

How long do results last?

This varies between patients. Dry eye related to meibomian gland dysfunction is a chronic condition, so improvement is managed over time rather than resolved permanently. Your doctor will discuss what to expect based on your findings and how you respond to the initial series.

Where can I get IPL for dry eye in the Tri-Cities?

Advanced Dry Eye Trifecta treatment, including IPL, is performed at our Pasco Dry Eye Center at 4820 N Rd 68, inside Walmart. Call (509) 543-7953 to schedule a dry eye evaluation.

Do you treat patients from Kennewick and Richland?
